DETAILED ITINERARY

The Gambia is a small West African country that is bursting at the seams with culture, with long stretches of uncrowded beaches and wonderful wildlife. With average temperatures between 29°C and 34°C it is pleasant throughout the year, although it is most popular during the European winter months, as this coincides with the dry season.

Known as the ‘Smiling Coast’, the friendly locals make this a wonderful place to experience traditional Gambian culture in the form of tasty food, African drumming and dancing, and vibrant local markets.

With long stretches of golden coastline, which are uncrowded even at peak times, you won’t struggle to find space to settle down and enjoy the African sunshine. Coconut palms offer welcome shade, and the occasional fruit lady will come to offer some tasty fresh fruit, should you wish to purchase any.

Most of the beaches outside the hotels are sandy and uncrowded, but travel just a short distance and you can find some that are completely empty and unspoilt. If you prefer some facilities we suggest a visit to Sanyang in the south, where you will find a beach bar, a few sunbeds and hammocks but very little else. On a Sunday, you may be fortunate enough to see a local wrestling match.

With a fantastic array of animals, birds and other wildlife, you don’t have to travel far to appreciate the natural resources of this country. River cruises and 4x4 tours are great ways of doing this. With over 540 bird species, you will spot many different species in your hotel’s gardens, or take a birdwatching tour led by a qualified naturalist.

Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau has been attracting visitors for years. The pool has around 100 crocodiles including the most well-known, Charlie, who is an impressive 2m. You can photograph crocodiles basking in the sun, and learn about traditional beliefs that the pool has special fertility and healing powers. If you prefer to keep your distance, enjoy lunch or a drink at Calypso Beach Bar in Cape Point, which overlooks a natural sea lake where you may also spot a crocodile.

Visits to local schools and villages are also popular and an excellent way to learn more about everyday life in The Gambia. You will be very welcome, often with singing and demonstrations of their teaching methods. We recommend visiting schools well away from the main tourist area, as these do not receive as many visitors. Donations of pencils, exercise books and other classroom supplies, some of which can be bought in the local market, are always appreciated but remember to give these to the teachers, rather than to the children. Deflated footballs will also bring much joy.

Gambians are happy to welcome you into their homes, especially the children who are very inquisitive and endearing. The sense of community will hit you as everyone works together to provide for the extended family (including multiple wives!), often in very basic conditions. Why not consider donating a low-energy stove?

You can also take a home cookery lesson, starting with a visit to the local market to shop for fresh ingredients, before returning home to prepare and eat a traditional Gambian meal.

The fishing markets at Tanji and Bakau are also full of colour, sounds and smells as the men bring in the catch and the women and children help to unload and prepare the fish – but don’t forget to ask permission before taking photographs.

Gambians love football, so if you get the chance to attend a local football match it is a great way of experiencing their passion for the sport. But know it can be very noisy with much cheering, singing and drumming.

There are also several great restaurants to try out, and increasingly more nightlife. The Gambia is probably not renowned for the diversity of its shopping outlets, but there are enough local crafts on offer to ensure you take home some memorable souvenirs.

In addition to this, most hotels have onsite entertainment programmes, with daily activities to suit all ages. You can also pamper yourself at a luxury spa.
