Sporades Island Hopping Holidays:

Skiathos + Skopelos - Greece

The beautiful islands of the Sporades archipelago are situated in the north-western Aegean Sea, not far from the Greek mainland. They are very close to one another, making Sporades island hopping holidays easy, with each island having its own distinctive culture and character.

Unbelievably pretty Skiathos is known for its wonderful sandy beaches. Much less visited Skopelos has a more traditional Greek flavour than its glamorous neighbour and a slower pace of life, whilst sleepy Alonnisos is surrounded by a marine park, with excellent snorkelling and diving. SAMPLE ITINERARY

The beautiful islands of the Sporades archipelago are situated in the north-western Aegean Sea, not far from the Greek mainland. They are very close to one another, making island hopping easy, yet each has its own distinctive culture and character. They are known for their wonderful sandy beaches, wooded terrain and excellent snorkelling and diving.

Unbelievably pretty Skiathos is only eight miles long. It is lively and fashionable, with over 50 superb sandy beaches. Skiathos town is a jumble of red-roofed houses, and climbing stone-paved streets cover the rocky arms of the small harbour.

During the day the town can appear rather sleepy, but in the evening the waterfront hums with life and has a daunting array of restaurants. Nightlife could mean a quiet café, a lively bar or a music club. Whatever your taste, Skiathos can accommodate it, but it does get very busy in season.

Less visited Skopelos is larger and more forested. Still very much a working island, it has a more traditional Greek flavour than its glamorous neighbour and a slower pace of life. The colourful town centre has narrow climbing streets, countless tiny chapels (over one hundred in all) and houses linked by bridges typical of the region. Mulberry trees line the waterfront and shade numerous cafés and restaurants. This scenic island was the location for the ‘Mamma Mia!’ movie.

The beaches range from tiny secluded coves (generally shingle) to long stretches of white pebble or sand/shingle, such as popular Stafilos Bay or Kastani, with its chilled beach club. The sea is sparklingly clear and the swimming is excellent.

Sleepy Alonnisos, the least developed island, is surrounded by a marine park that is home to dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals. Around its shores are many coves and beaches, lapped by the clearest of seas and backed by green hills. Inland is a scenic joy, with a network of marked trails through the varied countryside making for some excellent walking. Ferries and catamarans leave regularly from the main port of Patitiri for Skopelos, only 20 minutes away, and for Skiathos, another hour further to the west. This makes the odd day excursion easy, as well as twin-centre holidays.
