Situated in the warm Indian Ocean, sub-tropical Sri Lanka - meaning ‘Beautiful Island’ - offers a wonderful blend of Buddhist culture, lush tea plantations, rainforest bird life, beautiful mountain hikes, plentiful wildlife and spectacular beaches. This tear-shaped jewel, previously known as Ceylon, was never conquered by the Moghul Emperors, so has some of the best-preserved ancient Buddhist monuments in the world. These include the old capitals at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and some spectacularly large outdoor statutes of the Buddha. The Dambulla Cave Temples are nothing short of spectacular, and Sigiriya Rock will take your breath away. The hilltop capital of Kandy is home to the golden Temple of the Tooth and a beautiful botanical garden.

As road conditions can be chaotic, we suggest a private tour of the Cultural Triangle, travelling with your own driver/guide, before relaxing on a glorious Indian Ocean beach. If you love wildlife, you can see Asian elephants in Udawalawe, which also has an Elephant Transit Home, and visit Yala National Park which is famous for its leopards. You can also enjoy whale watching, as gigantic blue whales gather in these waters in profusion.

For a romantic and indulgent extension, the stunning Maldives islands are only a 1.5 hour flight away. Accommodation here is significantly more expensive, with luxury beach and over-water villas scattered throughout this pristine archipelago of low-lying atolls, reached by speedboat or sea plane from Male. Often there is only one hotel per atoll, with snorkelling, diving and water sports being the main focus.
