Holidays to Romania & Bulgaria
Romania is a huge country best known for the forested region of Transylvania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains, whose rocky peaks are surrounded by groves of pine and deciduous trees, with stretches of bright green meadow below and woods filled with deer, elk and bear. There are many wonderfully preserved medieval towns such as Sighişoara, Braşov and Sibiu, as well as rugged fortified Saxon stone churches, dazzling monasteries and castles - notably clifftop Bran Castle, long associated with the Dracula legend. Don’t overlook the 14th century Gothic-Renaissance Corvin (Hunedoara) Castle or King Carol I’s sumptuous Peleş Castle. Folk museums, particularly the open-air ‘skansens’ are a must, showcasing traditional culture and crafts such as bread-making, pottery, tanning and weaving.
The capital city of Bucharest is all energy and, in the south, the vineyards and charming small towns of the Danube Gorge offer wonderful opportunities for wine tasting. The Danube is Europe's second longest river and marks Romania's southern border with Bulgaria, before turning suddenly northward and emptying into the Black Sea. This delta is a protected wetland that provides sanctuary for hundreds of species of birds and fish, and has the largest expanse of reed beds in the world. It is wonderful for bird watching in the spring, whilst in summer the action moves to the Black Sea coast, with its many beach resorts.
