Portugal is normally associated with the glorious Mediterranean beaches of the Algarve, or the beautiful Atlantic Ocean island of Madeira, but this delightful country has so much more to offer - from historic Lisbon, the second oldest capital city in Europe after Athens, to the pretty wine-producing region of Porto, where you can take a river cruise down the Douro River. Moving inland, the walled town of Evora is one of Portugal’s best preserved medieval towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This off-the-beaten-track region is best explored on a tailor-made self-drive holiday. You can also discover the castles and palaces of Sintra, take a gondola ride along the canals of Aveiro (the Venice of Portugal), hike in the rugged mountains of Serra da Estrela Natural Park, or fly to the Azores archipelago where you can relax in geothermal hot springs and see dolphins, pilot and sperm whales all year round. From April to June you can also hope to see blue whales, orcas, humpback, fin and minke whales.
