Holidays to Czech Republic (Czechia) & Slovakia
Rooted in tradition and folklore, the Czech Republic (also known as Czechia) has the largest density of castles in all of Europe, with over 2,000 scattered around the country. The capital Prague is a gem, with the historic Charles Bridge straddling the Vltava River and a magnificent cobbled Old Town. The Bohemian novelist, Franz Kafka, was born in Prague and the city’s rich cultural heritage can be experienced in its many wonderful museums. If you're looking for live classical music, many churches and palaces offer evening concerts, whilst jazz and other live music is easily found. During festivals, folk performers and choral groups take to the squares and give free performances. There is also a long tradition of beer brewing, with a large beer festival held in May. If you venture outside Prague, you will find many Gothic castles, hillside chateaux and medieval towns. The spa town of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is a 3 hour train ride away, and the "bone church" in Kutna Hora is also within easy reach. South Bohemia is the best place to experience a traditional summer festival.
Around 80 per cent of neighbouring Slovakia lies more than 800 m above sea level, and its crowning glory are the Tatra Mountains. The highest range in the Carpathians, they form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland and are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with over 100 high altitude lakes and waterfalls. The small hamlet of Vikolinec, with its traditional log houses, is one of the prettiest you will find anywhere. You can also find many abandoned castles, and eight wooden churches built between the 16th and 18th centuries.
All hotels featured have charm and character, with high standards of comfort, service and cuisine. Each offers an excellent base from which to explore the key sights and surrounding countryside, whether travelling by train, fly-rail or air.
