Guadeloupe Holidays (Saint Marie):
Flights & Hotels in French Caribbean
SAMPLE ITINERARY
Guadeloupe is an island group situated south of Antigua and north of Dominica in the Caribbean. It is part of the so-called Leeward Islands, located where the north-eastern Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean (as distinct from the more southerly Windward Islands, which are in the path of the trade winds).
Due to their lush volcanic hills and white sandy beaches, the archipelago’s islands are often compared to St. Lucia in look and feel, though with the added benefit of far fewer tourists. As a French Overseas Territory, Guadeloupe boasts plenty of colourful French-Caribbean charm.
Better known as the fictional island of Saint Marie, of BBC’s ‘Death In Paradise’ fame, this picture perfect archipelago consists of six inhabited and six uninhabited islands, as well as numerous islets. Resembling the shape of a butterfly, the two largest islands of Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre are connected by a road link across the Salée River.
Grande-Terre is hilly, with long beaches and many sugarcane fields. Its sheltered south coast around ~Le Gosier is where you’ll find many of the best beaches and restaurants. The coral reefs along this coast also offers wonderful snorkelling. Just up the coast is Pointe-A-Pitre, the main business centre, which has some lively local markets. It is also the launching point for island hopping boat trips.
Basse-Terre is home to the lush tropical rainforests of Parc National de la Guadeloupe, where you can view the three cascades of the beautiful Carbet Falls, as well as La Grande Soufrière volcano. As the roads are good, we suggest you hire a car for a day or two to explore more of these two islands.
Further afield, the smaller outer islands of Marie-Galante, La Désirade and Iles des Saintes are great for day trips. You can bask on unspoilt white sandy beaches, and experience Caribbean plantation history on Marie-Galante, which feels like you’re stepping back in time to the 18th century.
Note: This destination does NOT offer the large resort style accommodation.
