SAMPLE ITINERARY
The small island of Bermuda is a British overseas territory situated in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the east coast of the United States – so not actually in the Caribbean itself. It is a tiny island (only 20 miles long and two miles wide) with a lush tropical landscape and distinctive pink sandy beaches, formed from finely-ground coral.
With regular direct flights from London, and a shorter flying time than the Caribbean, Bermuda is a popular sunshine destination - with a pleasant balmy climate, crystal-clear turquoise waters, pink sandy beaches and natural wonders that include awe-inspiring caves and grottos, rocky coves, idyllic islands and islets. Unlike the Caribbean there is no specific rainy season, although some months are wetter than others, which sustains the verdant landscape.
With its pastel-coloured mansions, the capital of Hamilton showcases British, American and other influences from around the world. If you head to the Royal Naval Dockyard in Sandys you can visit the 19th century fort, the National Museum and the aquarium, sample their famous rum cakes, watch artisans at work and buy a pair of Bermuda shorts. If you are there on a Monday in the summer, enjoy Destination Dockyard, a lively street party. Alternatively join Harbour Nights every Wednesday at Front Street, Hamilton, for live entertainment, local arts and crafts and children's activities - a great spot to soak up the Bermudan way of life.
It's not just the beaches that are beautiful. Take a trip underground at the Crystal Caves, said to be millions of years old, to see beautiful azure waters and rock-formed chandeliers.
If you enjoy hiking or biking, you can explore the historic Railway Trail, a scenic route that spans the whole island. Bermuda offers several championship golf courses with magnificent views out to sea.
Bermuda's calm and clear waters and balmy weather make it a perfect sailing spot, and the island hosts several prestigious sailing events.
Diving is also popular, with several reefs off the coast, as well as shipwrecks that offer spectacular diving opportunities. You can also get close to humpback whales, Bermuda chubs (ray-finned fish) and other marine species.
You can't rent cars on Bermuda, but you can hire a scooter. Alternatively the buses are very efficient and great for mixing with the locals.
In between exploring and relaxing on postcard-perfect beaches such as Horseshoe Bay, you can taste the abundance of fresh fish, while rum comes in everything from cakes to cocktails.
