The Baltic States are three former Soviet countries situated on the shores of the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Their southerly borders are with Poland and Belarus, whilst to the east is Russia.

Riga is the beautiful capital of Latvia. Situated at the mouth of the Daugava River, it is a major cultural centre with many museums and concert halls. The city is known for its wooden buildings, art nouveau architecture and medieval Old Town. Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, which is dotted with castles, churches and hilltop fortresses, and boasts more than 1,500 islands and many lakes., as well as a preserved Old Town. Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, which, until the pogroms of World War 2, was the centre of eastern European Jewish cultural life for nearly 150 years.
