The small British Overseas Territory of Anguilla is an entirely unspoiled low-lying coral island that offers a luxurious but low-key holiday. Its beaches are amongst the very best in the Caribbean and never feel crowded, whilst its hotels and restaurants are of a very high standard and service is impeccable.

Lying north of St. Martin, Anguilla is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in luxury hotels, gourmet restaurants and long stretches of pure white picture-postcard beaches, fringed by coconut palms. Watching the sunset from one of the beach bars – rum punch in hand and listening to Caribbean tunes – is an absolute must. Shoal Bay is particularly beautiful. It is over a mile long and has a teeming offshore reef perfect for snorkelling. Blanchards Restaurant and Beach Shack serves some of the freshest ocean fare, whilst Straw Hat at Meads Bay offers stylish and intimate surroundings.

If you wish to visit some of the numerous islets and secluded coves, you can take a yacht to Prickly Pear Cay, Scrub Island or Dog Island and enjoy mesmerising views. You can also visit Scilly Cay, where you can choose your own Anguillan spiny lobster from the day’s catch and have it cooked to perfection. You can also explore by boat or kayak, and view excellent examples of rock art that reflect the island’s centuries-old history.

From April to November, leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles can be seen laying their eggs on Anguilla’s beaches. After dark you watch them crawl up the sand to nest, or later see their offspring hatch.

Divers can explore the underwater world of Stoney Bay Marine Park, and the shipwrecks off Sail Reef, north of the island. Prickly Pear Cay has an incredible underwater cavern, with barracuda and nurse sharks swimming through magnificent rock formations.

Sailing is also excellent here. Annual regattas are held throughout spring and summer, with locals racing in hand-built boats.

An island bursting with a joyful atmosphere, Anguilla is home to lively locals, sizzling barbecues, feisty rum punches and live reggae music that you can’t help but enjoy. With its laid-back pace of living, and fine dining restaurants that fuse contemporary international cuisine with traditional local ingredients, this is a destination that will satisfy the most discerning traveller. It is also ideal for those seeking seclusion.
